My new baby nephew arrived today!

My sister Melissa and her boyfriend Tim had their baby boy this morning at 10:33 am... 9 lbs 1 oz and 21 inches.  He's a big boy.  Heading up to the hospital now... stand by for pics.  :)  They named him Owen Michael. <3

I'm super excited to see him!

Goals

The list of goals could go on and on... but lets start with what I want to accomplish in 2011 :)

Health/Fitness Goals:
  • Run a 5k without stopping to walk
  • Be under 200 lbs by the end of the year (currently 231)
  • Learn to eat healthy - not easy (like fast foods)- I am an extremely picky eater... will explain more in later posts
  • Be comfortable in my own skin
  • Wear a size 15 jeans... currently 18 (in Old Navy size, which means 20 everywhere else)
  • Fit in my old Poms uniform from 12th grade.  (Poms is like a mix of dance and cheerleading - performing at 1/2 time shows for football and basketball.  I was only on Poms my senior year but wished I made the squad earlier b/c it was awesome).
  • Stick to Weight Watchers (WW) - started 2 weeks ago... and learn to do it the right way.  I need to quit cheating.

Personal Goals:
  • Graduate with my bachelors in Info Tech Web Design @ University of Phoenix - commencement is May 14th but my classes don't officially end until June 13.
  • Get promoted
  • Start grad school at Towson University (in MD) in the fall
  • Write in this blog at least 2 times a week.
  • Have fun over summer break (first time in 2 years that I haven't been taking classes year round) - Yay!
  • Quit looking for Mr. Right... he will come along when the time is right.  :)
I'm sure there will be more throughout the year.  But we shall see.

C25K Week 2 & Timing my one mile...

Yesterday I started week 2 of C25K.  This week I am doing intervals of 90 seconds running followed by 2 minutes walking for 20 minutes.  For all you skinny people (or at least healthy people) this may seem so simple... but for this fat girl, it's not!

I could really tell the difference in the 60 sec intervals from week one to the 90 sec intervals this week.

Today I decided to see how far I could run and see how fast I could run/walk a mile in.  Well I ran 1/2 a mile in 6 minutes without stopping. Which is a HUGE accomplishment for me.  I mean I could barely run the 90 second intervals yesterday.  Finished my mile in 14:19 and ran 2/3 of it.  I ran the first 1/2 mile in 6 minutes.  Walked the next quarter of a mile, trying to recover my breath.  Ran for half of the last lap and walked a little then finished running.  So 14:19 is something for me to be proud of.

Note:  I am running on a treadmill for now.  I eventually want to start running outside but I can't until the lovely season is over with... I have horrible allergies and go into sneezing fits from just walking from my car to my house or car to work.  It's bad.  So after the pollen (aka tree sperm) is done falling all over everything, I will venture outside and learn to run on the road (which I know is a million times harder).  Also, I have slight asthma... it normally only bothers me when I exercise a lot (which isn't very often) but as a kid it used to bother me a lot when I was out playing with my friends.

Today I felt my throat constricting a little towards the end of my run.  I haven't had the need for my inhaler in ages b/c I never pushed myself enough to need it.  So guess it's time to pull it back out and use it before my runs.  :)  But this isn't going to hold me back any.

The Beginning

April 20th, 2011 - I decided that I need to get motivated and start an exercise program.  Through watching Biggest Loser and reading Ben Davis's blog (bendoeslife.com) I am getting motivated to start running.  On this day I started the Couch to 5K (C25K) running program.

I've decided to start this blog to keep track of my progress, give me some accountability, and just so I can share my experience with anyone who wonders upon this blog.

Week 1 of C25K wasn't bad at all.  Or should I say it didn't seem so bad at first.  The first day I finished strong and felt good about it.  But there was one flaw in my plan... I didn't stretch.  OMG, I had sore legs for 2 days after that.  The front of my legs (quads... had to look up what they were called, lol) hurt so bad.  But I still ran the next day as day 2... That 60 secs of running felt a lot harder to do.  I took 2 days off before trying day 3 of C25K.  Still a bit tough but doing better.

About me:
I weigh 231lbs (my heaviest was 246 about 2 months ago).  The only reason I lost that weight was b/c I had my tonsils removed.  I've always had issues with my weight and after high school the scale keeps going up and up.  This year is about me and getting a handle on my weight and overall health.

I have never been a runner and actually despise the sport (is it technically a sport?  I think so).  I never liked sports growing up b/c they all required running and lets face it, I had low self-esteem and never thought I could run.  I always walked the mile test they give you in school.

So why in the hell would someone like me want to start running?  The answer is because I never thought I could do it and I'm sure a lot of people don't think I can either.  I will prove them wrong.  Reading "Ben Does Life" has really inspired me and through searching for similar blogs, I've found a lot of overweight people learning to run... so why not this fat girl?  And so the journey begins.
